Penthouse Pornstar, January 1984

Nina Lee Bio

Nina Lee is an American adult model and actress. She was born Rhoda M. Swanson on December 4, 1963, in Three Rivers, California, United States. She has also been worked professionally as Rochelle Swanson.

Nina Lee stepped into the Penthouse spotlight in January 1984 as a featured model at just 20. With a 34-23-33 figure, hazel eyes and brown hair, Nina had a look that fit naturally into Penthouse's 1980s style of polished glamour.

Before Rochelle Swanson became a familiar face in low-budget thrillers, television dramas, and late-night cable, she had already stepped into Penthouse under another name. In January 1984, posing as Nina Lee, she appeared in the magazine with the kind of polished, slightly dangerous glamour that defined the period. The photographs soon became more than a modeling credit: they collided directly with her public life when Swanson, then known as Rhoda Swanson, relinquished her Miss San Diego title after the nude images came to light.

That episode gives her Penthouse appearance an unusual place in her story. What might have remained a single early pictorial instead became a very public turning point, revealing the tension between conventional beauty-pageant expectations and the more provocative image she had chosen for herself. Penthouse, with its taste for elegant rebellion, was an appropriate setting. Under the Nina Lee name, Swanson projected the warm, high-voltage centerfold confidence of the early 1980s—glamorous, composed, and just disruptive enough to cause consequences beyond the page.

Those consequences did not stop her career. After adopting the name Rochelle Swanson, she moved decisively into acting and built a substantial résumé during the 1990s. Her film work included Night Fire, Secret Games 3, Droid Gunner, Hungry for You, Walnut Creek, Mutual Needs, and On the Border, while television brought appearances in NYPD Blue, Melrose Place, Lois & Clark and Baywatch. She also played Sheila Shane in Sherman Oaks and Cynthia Shaw in Forever, making acting—not modeling—the defining professional chapter that followed her Penthouse debut.

Seen in retrospect, the January 1984 Penthouse pictorial feels almost like a prologue. Rochelle Swanson would eventually become known for an acting career spanning erotic thrillers, action pictures, soaps, and mainstream television, but Nina Lee came first: a bolder alter ego caught at the moment when glamour, ambition, and controversy briefly occupied the same frame.
